BANKS, JOHN L. JR.

Mr. John L. Banks Jr. passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the age of 81. He is the father of Senior Office Assistant Cherlyn D. Cormier, assigned to the Property and Financial Crimes Division. Services were held November 4 with burial in Calvary Hill Cemetery in Humble.

Ms. Chandra T. Boston passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at the age of 44. She is the daughter of Senior Customer Service Clerk Marie J. Boston of the Records Division. Services were held November 12.

BROADNAX, RONALD K.

Mr. Ronald K. Broadnax Sr. passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the age of 69. He is the father of Senior Police Officer Ronald K. Broadnax Jr., assigned to the Midwest Division. Services were held November 18 in Seguin. 

BROWN, RUBY

Mrs. Ruby Brown passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the age of 83. She is the grandmother of Sergeant Oneil A. Chambers of the Joint Processing Center Unit. Services were held December 2 in Kingston, Jamaica.

BUTLER, OFFICER CHARLES E. (RETIRED)

Retired Police Officer Charles E. Butler passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty J. Butler. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. He joined the Houston Police Department on April 28, 1958, Academy Class No. 8. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Patrol Bureau, Jail Division, and Northeast Division. Police Officer Butler retired on July 30, 1978. Services were held Novenb er 26 in Crockett.

EDWARDS, VIRGINIA ANN

Mrs. Virginia Ann Edwards passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the age of 66. She is the mother of Sergeant Clinton D. Edwards, assigned to the Emergency Communications Division. Services were held November 29 with burial in Willis.

FLORES, MARY S.

Mrs. Mary S. Flores passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at the age of 84. She is the mother of retired Senior Police Officer Ismael “Iffy” F. Flores Jr. who was last assigned to the Homicide Division until his retirement on January 13, 2007. Services were held November 21 in Corpus Christi.

GARZA, FERNANDO

Mr. Fernando Garza passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022, at the age of 76. He is the father of Senior Police Officer Carlos E. Garza of the Southeast Division and the father-in-law of Senior Police Officer Brenda A. Thomas-Garza of the Clear Lake Division. Services were held November 29 with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

HOGG, LT. PHILLIP “MIKE” (RETIRED)

Retired Lieutenant Phillip “Mike” Hogg passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Retired Senior Police Officer Cynthia B. Hogg, who retired on April 24, 2004. He joined the Houston Police Department on February 2, 1970, Academy Class No. 43. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Southeast, Northeast, Special Operations, Crime Analysis, Vice, Traffic and Accident, Personnel, and Eastside Divisions. Lieutenant Hogg retired on November 30, 1990. Services were held December 1 in Pearland. 

LEATHERWOOD, BARBARA J.

Mrs. Barbara J. Leatherwood passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at the age of 80. She is the mother of Senior Police Officer Mark R. Leatherwood, assigned to the Southwest Division. Services were held December 2 with burial in Latexo, Texas. 

NICKELL, SGT. WYLIE “DON” NICKELL (RETIRED)

Retired Sergeant Wylie “Don” Nickell passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wanda S. Nickell; he is also the father of Retired Sergeant John W. Nickell, who retired on March 21, 2020, out of the North Belt Division. He is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Retired Police Officer Bobbie E. Foster, who passed away on June 3, 2022. Sergeant Wylie Nickell was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He joined the Houston Police Department on December 27, 1966, Academy Class No. 34. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Special Operations, Northeast, and Auto Theft Divisions. Sergeant Wylie Nickell entered Phase Down on July 3, 2004, retiring on February 24, 2007. Services were held November 21 in Tomball.

RICHARDS, JAMES G.

Mr. James G. Richards, Jr. passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022, at the age of 61. He is the father of Police Officer James G. Richards, III, assigned to the Central Division.  Services were held November 19 with burial in Paradise Cemetery South in Pearland.

TUCKER-BAEZA, LYNETTE JO

Mrs. Lynette Jo Tucker-Baeza passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the age of 66. She is the mother of Police Officer Jason E. Tucker, assigned to the Property and Financial Crimes Division. Services were held December 3 with burial in Odessa.

WADE, CANDICE G.

Retired Executive Office Assistant Candice G. Wade passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the age of 81. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Police Officer Antonio Guzman, Jr., who was Killed in the Line of Duty on January 9, 1973; and her second husband, Retired Police Officer Edwin B. Wade, who passed away on May 2, 2011. She joined the Houston Police Department as a Dispatcher, on April 30, 1973. During her tenure with the department, she was assigned to the Emergency Communications Division, Traffic and Accident Division, Office of the Chief of Police, Organizational Development Command, and Special Investigations Command. Executive Office Assistant Wade retired on January 4, 1997.

WALMON, LINDBERGH LAYTON

Mr. Lindbergh Layton Waltmon passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at the age of 95. He is the father of retired Senior Police Officer Michael W. Waltmon who was last assigned to the Midwest Division until his retirement on November 1. 2008. Services were held November 7 with burial in Perry Cemetery.

YOREK, ASSISTANT CHIEF FRANKLIN E. (RETIRED)

Retired Assistant Chief Franklin E. Yorek passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances M. Yorek; he is also the brother of Retired Commander Glenn D. Yorek, who retired on January 4, 2020. He joined the Houston Police Department on January 8, 1968, Academy Class No. 37. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Central and Records Divisions. On July 1, 1978, he was promoted to the rank of Police Captain. As such, he was in command of the Crime Analysis Division. On July 12, 1980, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Police Chief. And as such, he was in command of the North Patrol Command, Criminal Investigations Command, Tactical Support Command, Office of Inspector General, and Organizational Development Command. Assistant Chief Yorek retired on March 25, 2006. Graveside services will yet to be scheduled.
