Gryder Tournament draws big crowd to see softball, remember fallen officers

The Annual Gary Gryder Memorial Softball Tournament drew a big crowd of people who had lots of softball fun while sharing memories of fallen officers.

Held March 5 at a softball complex on South Main, the tournament was dedicated to the popular officer and softball player Gary Gryder (EOW: June 29, 2008d. His son Austin, an HPD officer, was among the players.

“We hope that all of the surviving members of our fallen officers felt the full force of our love and affection for them,” HPOU 2nd Vice President Tim Whitaker, who emceed the event, said at the conclusion of the tourney. “Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we hope that today they were reminded of that.”

The tournament drew teams from all around Southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. The HPD Blues, HPD Honor Guard as well as the HPD Mounted Patrol participated in the festivities. Outgoing Chief Art Acevedo was among the crowd of spectators.

Besides HPOU, the other tournament sponsors were BioTech Crime & Trauma Scene Cleaning South Houston, Assist the Officer, Redline Response Foundation.

3rd Place – Houston Fire Legends

Lower Division

1st Place – Team Louisiana

2nd Place – Double Tap

3rd Place – HPD Southwest
