July 11 Mushinski event raises over $17,000

Assist the Officer sponsored a July 11 fundraiser that raised more than $17,000 to help offset medical expenses for Michele Mushinski, wife of Senior Police Officer James Mushinski. Michele died June 24 after a courageous battle against brain cancer.

The fundraiser was held at Bareback Bar & Icehouse on Kuykendahl in north Houston and featured tons of auction items ranging from sports memorabilia to fishing trips and farm equipment.

HPOU board member Bobby Kessler, the lead coordinator, said Michele’s family was present, including husband HPD SPO James Mushinski, a 37-year veteran now assigned to Vehicular Crimes, and two daughters, Kassi and Kaleigh.

Kessler said an anonymous donor provided all the barbecue and singled out a cousin of the Mushinskis for providing all manner of farm equipment to be auctioned, including lawn mowers, chain saws and three commercial backpack sprayers.

Kessler identified the cousin as Andy Kleppel, owner of Windstar Equipment at 18235 Farm Road 1488 in Magnolia.

“We raised a little bit more than $17,000,” Kessler reported. “All of it will be used to pay medical expenses. All of this was sponsored by Assist the Officer.”
