If we had to give a grade for the number of Patrol Officer and Investigator of the Month nominations it might be a B or even a B-plus.
But the Badge & Gun encourages officers in every unit, division and station throughout HPD to strive for an A-plus by increasing the number of your colleagues to be nominated for these two special monthly honors at the Union’s general membership meeting.
HPD officers strive for excellence and HPOU wants to underscore examples of that high performance standard as often as possible.
HPOU’s Ryan Moreland heads a five-member committee tasked with choosing a Patrol Officer(s) of the Month and an Investigator(s) of the Month. Frequently there is more than one honoree since the department emphasizes teamwork. Two partners often share the honor, which always includes a $100 gift card to each honoree, a picture in the B&G (unless the winner works undercover) and a nomination for HPOU Patrol Officer and Investigator of the Year awards.
The latter honorees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC during Police Week in May.
“Nominations have come in more frequently in recent months,” Moreland said. “We generally get more nominations from Special Victims, but we all know there is excellence in every division of officers going the extra mile and bringing the worst crooks out there to justice for the people of Houston.
“I want to urge all officers to pick out the best examples of excellence and nominate the officers who are performing at the highest levels. We need to recognize them.”
All you have to do is go to HPOU.org, hover over the Members menu and find the nomination forms. Click on the one you need and start filling in the description of a job well done by a fellow HPD officer.
Moreland said he and the committee always get every nomination and give each one of them serious consideration.
He said they are each good for one year from the month they are submitted.
