The fundraising efforts to benefit Officer Rudy Madrid, a victim of esophageal cancer, began earlier in the summer and will continue through the end of August.
The fundraising included three events sponsored by Rudy’s fellow officers and members of the HPD Marksmanship Team. The funds are channeled through Assist the Officer Foundation.
The online auction benefiting Madrid ended Friday, July 31, netting a total of at least $20,630, between donations and the auction.
Madrid, a 29-year HPD veteran, is stationed at Airport-IAH Division, where fellow officers Laura Salitros and Pam Slater led the coordination of the “FIGHTer” T-shirt campaign that raised $5,000.
Officers Salitros and Slater, along with Officer Peter Esbrandt, coordinated a barbecue fundraiser that was subsequently cancelled due to social distancing guidelines. The Assist the Officer Foundation (ATO) helped redirect those efforts by coordinating an online auction in place of the barbecue.
The online auction featured sports memorabilia, AR-15s, a Labrador puppy with papers and other enticing items.
The gun raffle, where a $20 donation affords the participant one entry, or six entries for donations of $100, will see the benefits going toward Madrid’s growing medical bills. The event will be live streamed on the ATO Facebook page at noon, Aug 31.
“We urge all officers and their family members and friends to realize they still have plenty of time to purchase raffle tickets,” Assist the Officer’s Gabriela Gregory said. For Madrid Gun Raffle tickets, please contact Gabriela at email@example.com.
