The Houston Police Officers Union recognized Officer Ryan Bearden of the Special Investigations Command, Cyber & Financial Crimes Division as its Investigator of the Month for September for his work in an employee embezzlement case.
Sgt. Jason Alderete nominated Bearden and detailed the case for the Badge & Gun.
Sgt. Alderete said the complainants were owners of a Fast Signs business “and are friends of mine.” When they discovered that an employee was embezzling money from their business, the sergeant had them file a report. The case was eventually assigned to Officer Bearden, who pursued the case with enthusiasm.
“They commended his professionalism and his eagerness to pursue the suspect in this investigation,” Alderete said. “I was impressed that Officer Bearden, who is new to investigations, was able to do such an outstanding job on a complex investigation such as this.”
Officer Bearden discovered that the suspect employee used a sophisticated ruse to embezzle $539,740.60 between April 8, 2015 and Oct. 24, 2019. The officer waded through boxes of documents and was able to discover the method that the suspect used to embezzle the money.
Sgt. Alderete said:
“It should be noted that the company’s long-time accountant could not determine how the suspect was embezzled the funds. I would like to commend Officer Bearden for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to his job.
“The actions taken by Officer Bearden, is evidence that he is committed to a better quality of life for the citizens he serves.”
