Back the Blue event deemed huge success

The second annual Back the Blue Assist the Officer fundraising event held on Aug. 13 proved to be a fun-filled Saturday with what the generous promoter described as “good food, good drinks and a good time.”

But Darrell Kuykendall, a booking agent in the entertainment industry and surviving son of an HPD officer, said donations were still coming in, making it difficult to put a final fundraising number together for this issue.

“The weather was great,” Kuykendall reported. “You couldn’t ask for better weather. Everybody is ready for next year.”

The venue was Barrel Park Houston, home of the Legendary Tumbleweed Texas at 13101 Kuykendahl. Admission was $5.

Kuykendall was surprised and exceptionally pleased with the appearance and support of actress Elise Haynes, who hails from Beaumont. She stars in NCIS – NOLA and has a growing following all around her hometown of Beaumont and well beyond.

Haynes stayed most of the sunny afternoon and posed for pictures with many of the attendees. The promoter said he was excited about the fact that the ATO logo was in the background of many of these photographs.

That was appropriate since Back the Blue’s purpose is to help fund the organization that helps officers in special need.

“Elise came out and supported the event. She tracked me down and came out and supported everything. She was as sweet as can be. She posed with a lot of people.”

Other attractions were Grammy-winning country music artist Rick Trevino, 17-year-old singer/songwriter Jenna Katherine and Rush Creek, a popular group that features all different types of country music.

Jenna Katherine opened the festivity singing the National Anthem. Fox, SWAT and other HPD attractions also contributed to the glitz and excitement.

Back the Blue was graciously promoted by three area radio stations: 93Q Country, 97.1 Country Legends and 106.9 and 107.5 the Eagle Classic Rock.
